Coop D’Etat featured in the Wall Street Journal!

From The Wall Street Journal:

First-time chicken owners tend to have lots of questions, so customer-service comes with the business. Among the most common: “Do you need a rooster to get eggs?” says Judy Morris, owner of Coop D’État LLC, a pet-chicken consulting and retail company that she runs out of two farmers’ markets in her hometown of Weston, Conn. (The answer is no.)

Appreciate the Little Things (from Judy’s recent appearance on “The Martha Stewart Show”)

From “The Martha Stewart Show”:

“When Judy Morris, special projects producer for Martha Stewart Living, was first introduced to the idea of keeping chickens, she “just didn’t get it.” But now, chickens provide a wonderful after-school ritual for her children, who love to take the birds along on visits to the neighbors. And most importantly, the chickens remind Judy and her family to think about how all farm animals nourish us, and to not take small things, like an egg, for granted.”

Silkie with her chicks!

Our chicks are now about a month old (they grow up so fast!!!), and I’ve been so busy around Oakwood Farm that I haven’t had a chance to post this sweet shot from a few weeks back. Our silkie is a great mother – She rarely left her clutch, even though the other hens kept laying eggs in her box! She sat on them all and every one of them hatched.

Coop D’Etat Quick Tip – Make Food Available (and water too, of course!)

Don’t ration food! Give your birds 24/7 access to all the food they can eat (and water they can drink). Unlike dogs and many other pets, chickens self-regulate and only consume the appropriate amount of food and water each day.
